Historically, in the USA, the states south of
the Mason-Dixon line, with an agrarian
economy based on plantations worked by
slaves, which seceded from the Union at the
beginning of the US Civil War, becoming the
Confederacy. The term is now loosely applied
in a geographic and cultural sense, with
Texas often regarded as part of the Southwest
rather than the South.
